Square for Susan

Susan's theme was "flower power". I believe it was the second piece i worked on, not counting my own, and i had a lot of fun with it, after some initial puzzlement. I love florals but starting this one for her was a bit daunting! I didn't want it to be conventional, but neither did i want it too outre!

Since i never know what order photos are going to go into blogger, i'll just say one is of the door closed, one open, a detail of the door, a detail of the bug and how i made the door:}

I had an earring with dangling parts that were the perfect size for hinges and the door handle. I also used some flattened metal beads that Anna Nowicki had sent me a long while ago. They were in correct scale and worked wonderfully!!!

The bug is a painted styro leaf hopper, one of the many bug "picks" that are always floating around flower shops---just added some beads and longer legs to him and he;'s happy crawling on the leaves, ready to leap through the door as soon as it opens.

I had also used this piece with most of it blocked out, to show the group how to integrate the previous squares with the details that were visible, and how to "encroach" into them so it all tied in better. Painting in some viney tendrils and adding stitching accomplished this. My sunflower's petals also leaned over the visible edge :}

I think Susan will enjoy opening that door, and in her imagination going to her garden for lots of Flower Power!!
